I have had a number of writers tell me, over the years, that I needed to read Elmore Leonard to get a grasp of well written mystery/detective stories. A master, they said.

I just finished Freaky Deaky - a detective story with some pretty interesting scenes. Definitely not for the MG - perhaps for more edgy YA though, if you don't mind your kids reading about 70's drug culture (and present as well) and the destruction of the Federal Building etc. Bombs - sex... and well... some interesting politics.

I loved the story - well written all around - amazing characterizations (each with their own voice so distinct that I could hear them) and their own story arcs. I wish I could get some personal criticism from him on my MG - YA mystery.

If you're looking to read awesome, tightly written crime stories - Elmore Leonard's Freaky Deaky delivers!
