How to Use Quotes

Discussion started on

Hi guys!

Here's a quick tutorial on how to properly quote another poster within your own message.

When someone posts a message, there is a 'quote' button in the upper right-hand corner of their post.  Select the message you wish to quote by clicking the quote button.  You will be taken to the reply page to compose your own reply.  In the text field, you'll see this:

[ quote author=member link=topic=characterstring1 date=character string 2 ]
quote text - the actual message the original poster has composed goes here
[ /quote ]

Please compose your reply outside the quote field.  That means directly before [ quote author etc ] or directly after [ /quote ], but not within the quote field.  Eg:

Your response here.

[ quote author=member link=topic=characterstring1 date=character string 2 ]
quote text - the actual message the original poster has composed.
DO NOT REPLY HERE.
[ /quote ]

Or your response here.

If you would like to quote multiple members in one post, click 'reply.'  You will be taken to the reply page to compose your own reply.  Scroll down and click the 'Insert Quote' link that is on the posts you would like to quote.  All the quotes you have selected will automatically be included in the reply field when you click 'Insert Quote'.

Same rule applies as before: compose each of your reply outside the quote field.  That means directly before [ quote author etc ] or directly after [ /quote ], but not within.

Example:

[ quote author 1 etc ]
Quote # 1
[ / quote 1 ]

Your reply to Quote #1 goes here.

[ quote author 2 etc ]
Quote # 2
[ / quote 2 ]

Your reply to Quote #2 goes here.

Just a head's up.  Quotes can be tricky.  If you quote a member and reply to their post within the quote box, it can make it very difficult for other members to to read your text or separate it from the original poster's.

Clear as mud?  :)
