This program sounds great.  One question:  does anyone know if the tuition is tax deductible?
#31 - December 29, 2009, 08:26 AM

You'd have to look at the tax forms.

From what I understand, and if nothing has changed, there are two places to report the tuition cost--one is in the credits area of the 1040 and the other is a deduction (but I don't believe on the other form.) You can only use one of these options.
I'd suggest looking at the instructions when you fill out your taxes this year and see how tuition would affect your taxes. (Maybe even run a sample of the numbers as if you had paid tuition and see how that changes the bottom line.) Or talk to an accountant or tax specialist--they would know for sure.

Wow!  I never even CONSIDERED this.  Thanks for asking, svz, and thanks for the reply, Sarah.  I'll definitely ask an accountant.
Happy New Year, and for all of you headed to Montpelier next weekend, I can't wait to meet you!

I'm counting down the days!

I never thought I'd be looking forward to living in a dorm and walking down the hall to go to the bathroom!

I can't wait!

For new VCFA students -

Did you know there is an online Student Forum just for the VCFA community?
I found it extremely helpful to ask questions and learn about Rez before I went.

Contact Melissa Fisher for information on the Forum if you don't have it already.

I am so bummed that I'm not there right now! Don't know if I can wait for July. I'm so excited for those of you who are there this month. The hubby and I are planning excursions for the year (picking kids up from college, taking them back--seems like the only vacations we get!). HOWEVER, we're planning on going out to Vermont four days early so he and I can have a little R & R and see some sights before the rez begins, then he'll fly home. I even promised to play golf with him as that's something he would love to do (I hope there are a lot of very patient golfers in VT). I do have some projects to get finished before July and that gives me some real focus, but still...

As soon as you can, get on the forum and get to know us. It helps you to feel connected to VCFA before you get there. Feel free to PM me or email me if you have questions.

See you in July,
Kelly

Actually, Kelly, I think they've changed the procedure a bit. Because students aren't actually officially registered until they're at their first residency, I believe they aren't given forum access before it. I could be wrong, but that was the last I heard. Obviously you (nhatch) can contact Melissa Fisher about it.

On another note, it was a fantastic residency and I was super impressed with Erin and the rest of her class!

I hope not because the forum is where I got a lot of my silly questions answered before the first rez--like what to pack, how to mail ahead boxes, etc. Well, if you can't get on, feel free to email me. (kabarson at gmail dot com)

I don't think this is true because there were 1 or 2 new people on the Forum before the January Rez.
It would really stink if it were true, though.

I emailed Shannon yesterday about getting on the forums and she said I would be able to get in after my first residency. :(  But thank you for all your offers of help.  I'll be in touch!

Congratulations, SVZ! I'm another grad who would be more than happy to answer any questions. My email is mariannabaer at gmail. And don't worry about the forum right now. It didn't even exist when I started the program, but I never felt like there were questions I had that I couldn't get an answer to before my first residency.

Yay!!!

You guys are great!  I'm filling out my housing info. now.  Booking my flight out of DFW on July 10th (if I can get an early flight) with a layover in DC or Newark, then on to Burlington and a shuttle to Montpelier.  Best shuttle service is Jessica's?

I'm so excited!
