i love the pelican idea :)  there is definately a gap in the market for pelican books!

not sure of my best idea, but i've had some terrible ones, such as 'mr. cow' which i brainstormed for some time before realizing all cows are female :/

jonnyb, I'm with you on the cow thing. Last year we were driving through the countryside in Chile and I kept seeing cows (with udders) with horns. I got really confused (city girl here). I thought only bulls had horns?!

I have the same issue with chickens. Is a chicken always female? Or is it just a hen that's always female? And does that mean a cockerel is also a chicken? Ach, these domesticated animals, they're so tricky!

Modified to add: Just looked into this and discovered that a rooster is not a cockerel! Did you know that? Apparently the male chicken only becomes a rooster once he's matured and 'had experience with hens.' (Not my words!) Well I never.

:D You guys are funny! Those are the types of questions I always drive my husband crazy with. Well, he claims he doesn't mind, but I'm sure he must. Once I asked him what sound a hippo would make if it fell in a puddle. Don't you just love being a children's writer? :)

Siski, that's fascinating! Seriously, I never knew that about roosters. I'm a city girl too. All I know is, roosters [word censored]-a-doodle-doo and hens cluck. That's the extent of my knowledge.

Thanks, JonnyB! You're right, the pelican is often under-appreciated and overlooked. Poor fella. Hey, maybe Mr. Cow could be like Mr. Mom or something?

Interesting that all cows are female. What's up with Nickelodeon's BARNYARD animated series? The mc is a male cow, I thought. Is he a bull? Always thought that was totally bizarre,.. because he has the markings of a regular dairy cow (black/wht),... with a huge pink udder that sticks out. And he's an upright standing cow, at that,... so all his junk is there for everyone to see. (the udder, I mean. Not other junk.) Oh man... I might get banned here. Can we say "junk?"  :embarrassed2
#64 - November 23, 2010, 12:49 PM

Good point, Salina!  Ha ha ha! I know that show, but I never thought about it. That IS weird to see a male cow with, ummm, udder junk in his trunk. I, for one, am moostified.

So I am curious, how many of us have ideas from the last couple of days that involve turkeys? My "idea" (and I use that term loosely) from yesterday was, "What do turkeys eat for Thanksgiving?"  :-\

Funny you should ask! My FIVE SILLY TURKEYS book features turkeys that end in a Thanksgiving celebration. What do they eat?  Corn and pie. No turkey of any kind, thank goodness.

Salina, I definitely need to get your book! My daughter asked me that question about 12 times on Thanksgiving, sounds like she would love it.

That would be me. I have a turkey idea, too. Probably been done to death, but we'll see if it goes anywhere. lol

Echoing Kimberly Lynn's sentiment. Tara totally rocks for hosting this amazing challenge!  :bow

I have already written my turkey idea! It's posted in my crit group now. It's very short.

I actually wrote the first version after last year's Piboidmo, but I was never 100% happy with it. This year I came up with a different take on it. So it was really a rewrite as opposed to something new. I like it better now.

But, yes! I came up with turkey ideas both years.  :smile

And another huge thanks to Tara! This has been a great motivator for me.  :thankyou

It has been a blast, Tara! :chesirecat

PiBoIdMo reaffirmed how much I love reading and writing picture books.  Also, it was fun visiting with other writers and illustrators who love this genre.

Good luck with your debut picture book.  It’s going to be awesome! :thankyou
