A "strange thing" happened to me at the Nevada conference last weekend. It was... totally unexpected and funny, in a kind of warped way.

Here's an extraordinarily short version of what happened:  I was leading a workshop that was partly about using a website to promote yourself and your books, when one of the attendees said that until this conference she never knew I wrote picture books in rhyme.

I groaned loudly, and then another attendee piped up and said, "I never knew Verla Kay was a real person until this conference!"

I screamed and threw my body over the table, with my head buried in my arms. Everyone was pretty much laughing hysterically by this time, including myself.

But REALLY! I'm not even a REAL PERSON? Who ARE you people who use this message board? :dr :skull :voodoo :dr :mob :gaah

Verla's real, promise. I've seen her in person several times and read the books that she wrote. She even forgave me for mispronouncing her name for four days straight the first time I met her. Would someone that's not real do that? Nope. Hallucinations get angry if you mispronounce their names, and they can't write picture books (in rhyme or prose).

 :grouphug2 <---for you Verla!

John sees me hammering on the keyboard every day when I am logged on here.  He is convinced that I should attend a conference for my 40th and try to leapfrog over people to see if you are real.
I'd never do it Verla, but the thought is quite tempting. :-|
Besides, have these people never thought of looking on your main website?  Unless I am wrong, that is you, isn't it? :confused2
By the way, if you weren't "real", why would you have bothered to relay all your information on the problems with your son's wedding cake earlier in the year?

I smell a historical picture book about the great and mysterious Verla Kay, wagon-train feminist, prohibition rebel, the "real" Rosie the Riveter, and first woman president!

No?  ;)

Maybe you aren't real. Maybe none of us are. Maybe this board is a dream of Crusty the Clown's cigar-smoking circus monkey... :snork

It's because you're larger than life, Verla.

Sully--That wasn't Verla.  She's the one who puts money under your pillow when you lose a contract--er, I meant to say tooth.

Really, can we put rejection letters under our pillows and get a quarter?

Making metaphors out of molehills for over thirty years.

Mrs. Jones,
I had the same thought about Betty Crocker. She writes books too, ya know. AND Verla bakes cakes! No, she takes the cake.

(Someone please whisper the correct pronunciation of Verla's name to me.)

COULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL US HOW TO PRONOUNCE VERLA KAY?

Or how Stephanie mispronounced it?   Either would satisfy me.

Really, can we put rejection letters under our pillows and get a quarter?

I'd rather have a book contract than a quarter.

We should start having Verla sightings, you know, like they do with Big Foot.  :carrot

maybe the "V" is actually pronounced with a "w" sound, and the "k" is a silent k... :confused2
