Verla's Not Real?

Discussion started on

Hmm...wondering if I'm pronouncing it right...  I always thought it would be like the sound in 'learn' Vurla, but maybe I'm wrong..could it be like the sound in 'very'?  Vairla?  no idea.  Totally would love to hear the right way...

So let me get this straight.

We don't know how to pronounce her name. Some of us believe she's real and some of us don't. I see a parallel from all those years I spent in Sunday School.

Verla is a children's literature goddess.

If it's Werla, Eh!, I'm really far off the mark, but the people of Minnesota should be proud...lol.

So would us Canadians!!  :moose

Well, there ya go! If Santa's real, there's a good chance Verla's real, too.

hehe, yeah I'm still not sure which is right, even after Verla said I got it right.  It could be either one.  When I lived in Germany I knew someone named Werle, which was pronounced "VAIRLA" so maybe that could be right?  But I know another person named Verla who pronounces it "Vurla"...so ?????????

I never saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet I believe Verla exists,
And real she surely must be.

The correct way to say it is, "Vurla."

Unless, of course, Verla has been playing a joke on me for several years (and everyone else that's around when I see her has been in on it too).

Not going to tell you my mispronunciation. Nope. :-X It's not going to be my fault if someone else says it wrong!

Um, if Verla was not real, who on earth could have set this board?  A rogue computer virus that tapped into all of our minds and imaginations?  Don't think so.  Verla's far too human-like for that.
Besides, Verla, your opinion is far too real and valued for you not to be human. :grouphug2

Artemesia! That was on my other computer. I think I lost it when I switched computers. Oh, wait, though... maybe it's still on the backup drive. I need to find it. I LOVED that! I was just too danged busy to ever do anything with it. (And quite a few  other images, too.)

Uh oh. How do I know Verla Kay is real? How do I know any of you are real?   :ahh I just went to a demo of an AI system at Smith College (project was called Talk to Me). You were supposed to ask questions of the computer to try and get the computer to realize it wasn't a person. The computer's answers were as good as mine. (How would you answer "which was better Captain Kirk or Captain Picard?") Maybe I'm the one who isn't real.  :duh

I like it here, even if it isn't real.

I think good old Puddleglum (from C. S. Lewis's The Silver Chair) can help us out here:

"Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things-trees and grass and sun and moon and stars and Verla Kay herself. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones. .... We're just babies making up a game, if you're right. But four babies playing a game can make a play-world which licks your real world hollow. That's why I'm going to stand by the play world. I'm on Verla's side even if there isn't any Verla to lead it. I'm going to live as like a Blueboarder as I can even if there isn't any Blueboard!"
