Hello everyone :)

I've just finished my first picture book dummy and I documented the whole process on my website. I don't know if it might be helpful for new author/illustrators here (like me) to read - I would encourage anyone starting their own dummy to do this - it has kept me very motivated and organised (well, as organised as I can be).

I think the reason it's taken me so long to bite the bullet and 'just do it' is because I was unsure of the 'right way' to go about it. The good thing about that for me is that I've spent a couple of years researching the whole area of children's books and decided to write my own story whereas before the plan was always to solely illustrate. The bad thing is that another two years have gone by... :pityparty:

Congratulations on getting your first Picture Book dummy completed. They can tell more than an entire portfolio when displaying them at conferences. Dummies are the best way to show you know how to pace, carry a story, maintain characters and so much more.

Right now, I've completed two full color spreads and one color image for my current WIP, but want to complete another full color scene as I'm so excited about the visuals. At this rate, I maybe putting another dummy together . . . but my intention was to query with color samples on this one. We shall see.

Good luck with your submissions.

Max,

Your post sounded like you'd appreciate others to take a peek at what you've done, how you laid out your process.  If so, what is your website url ? Is your avatar picture a sample of your work? I like the feel of that piece.
