I wonder if anyone can help me brainstorm a list of picture books or chapter books about friendship, specifically friendship in a group of 3. My son had a really difficult time at school this year playing in a group of three. He had two friends who both wanted to play with him, but did not play together well. He ended up feeling really caught in the middle and any time he made a choice to play with one friend, the other would get angry. Really stressed him out.

They will be in separate classes next year so hopefully it will be a fresh start, but I still want to help him process what happened this year. Any book suggestions? He's five, so picture books or chapter books we can read aloud would be good. Also, he's not really picky (yet) about "girl" books versus "boy" books -- so for example I've heard that the American Girls books do a good job with relationship issues, but have no idea which ones. But if I got one of them for a read-aloud he would not object.

We've read:
Chester's Way
The Best Friends Club
Best Friends for Frances (had to heavily edit this one because I wanted to avoid the whole suggestion about Frances not being good at baseball because she is a girl. But still a great book.)

I really like TOOT TOOT ZOOM! by Phyllis Root, and I think it might fit the bill even though it ends up being about four friends. And it definitely has boy appeal. You may want to check it out. I hope things work out well for your son.

MARTY MCGUIRE by Kate Messner would be a great choice. It's a chapter book, and Marty is a third-grade girl who's had her best friend stolen by the girl who runs the princess clique at recess. But if he's not picky about "girl books" yet, he'll probably be fine with this one - Marty is more into catching frogs and getting muddy than being a princess.  :) It's a fun book, and definitely touches on how to "share" friends in a group of three.

If your son is open to books about girls my favorite book on the subject is ALL ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE by Lynne Rae Perkins. It's middle grade, not a chapter book, but it's so good.
