Do high schoolers still call it making out?  And if a couple are an "item, do high schoolers say, "I heard Jane and John are an item now?"

Thanks for any help.          :lightning:                           :thankyou2:

Make out, yes.
Item, not so much.

And instead of "an item," they would say, "Jane and John are a couple." I imagine there are other terms for couples that vary by region, but you can't go wrong with that one.

Yes to making out.
We get "Jane and John are going out" meaning they are a couple.

Making out? Sure. Or 'hooking up' is used a lot--but that could mean anything from making out to sex. Also, 'messed around with'.

Don't hear many teens using the phrase 'an item'...if ever. But I do hear 'together', 'going out', 'with', 'dating'.

Asked a kid, who wanted to know what kind of an item.  So definitely not an item.  Together or a couple.

I live in Ontario, Canada and can vouch for the fact that kids don't really use the word item anymore. Here teens do call making out "macking" though. But I'm thinking that term might be regional.

Around here, you might hear that so-and-so and so-and-so "are a thing."
