A friend lent me a book to read around 16-17 years ago, and I cannot remember the title. I've asked her, and now she can't remember either. The title is the last name of the family (I think) and the book has a couple living in rural England (I think) with a lot of kids, they are a bit odd, but very endearing, and there is a big food component in the book, roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy on everything, lots of really rich food, lots of Guinness (which they also give the baby) and I think at some point the man has a heart attack or something and the doctor tells the wife he can't eat her food anymore and she figures that's more likely to kill him than another heart attack.

I can't remember a lot of details, but I think there is a social worker or something that comes to the house through the story.

Anyone know this book?  :eh2

pretty please and thank you!

Parts of that sound like the Pop Larkin books -- The Darling Buds of May, A Breath of French Air -- I think there were about 6 of them. By H.E. Bates. I don't remember a social worker, but there was a tax man who might fit the bill. The baby definitely had Guinness, and there was a LOT of food. There was a wonderful adaptation starring a very young Catherine Zeta Jones as the eldest daughter.

They are some of my absolute favorite books!!!

after doing a search on amazon, I think I'm remembering the book as having the family name in title because I read an edition that included either some or all of the stories in one volume. Thank you again!! I've got my friend tied in knots trying to remember as well, so she'll be happy, too!
