Bog Expert Needed

I need to get in contact with an expert on bogs. I'm working on an article about bogs. Besides visiting one, I've also read online and books about them. Problem is, most magazines want any research to be reviewed by an expert. I've emailed a few organizations online that are trying to preserve bogs but haven't received responses. Anyone know where I might track down experts?

Maybe an environmental agency of some sort? Or a university that has environmental studies?

Wetlands specialists often work with developmental contractors, cities, zoos and other organizations involved in land use and management, species conservation and reclamation.  As Ann says, a good first stop might be the ES department at a university.

Allison, try Marc Seelinger at the Swamp School. www.swampschool.org/

I talked to him for a day-job project and if he can't (or more to the point, isn't willing to take the time to) help you, perhaps he can put you in touch with someone who can.

The Ohio Historical Society manages Cedar Bog in Champaign County -- it's a remnant of a boreal bog left over from the last Ice Age and is supposed to be quite special. I don't have a name for a curator, but the phone number of the Historical Society is (614) 265-6561.

I just have to say, is this a useful board to have around or what! Where else can you ask for a Bog Expert and get 4 suggestions in one day? : )

I second the prior statement. (I exit backwards bowing in awe.)

A couple of my strike-outs were with environmental agencies. Universities would be a good next step.

Good to see an American contact! So far, I had found only European ones. And none of those replied.

If a Canadian organization would be relevant, try Ducks Unlimited Canada.

Thanks! My experience with historical societies has always been positive. Also, this will make a second possibility for an American source. :hurrah

Indirectly, it will. I started my research initially for a novel that I plan to set in my home province in Canada. Bogs will serve as a crucial background.

At the same time, in gathering information, I realized what a fascinating topic bogs were and so have ideas for a couple articles. Hence, my need for experts.

Wow! Until recently, I have been mostly just reading and commenting on posts. This is just my second time to ask for help. You were all so fast in providing it!

My bog article is temporary on hold, because of a request by our local dog club for an article about agility. As soon as I can return to my bog research, I'll follow up on all your suggestions.
