I recently read an ARC of ONE FOR THE MURPHYS by Linda Mulally Hunt which dealt with a girl who was beaten my her stepfather and ended up in foster care.
Another book with a similar theme is WAITING TO FORGET by Sheila Kelly Welch. This book has an unusual structure. It's broken into "then" and "now." The "now" sections take place in a hospital waiting room. The "then" sections are flashbacks that deal with the abuse and neglect that the brother and sister have suffered.
And BUCK FEVER by Cynthia Chapman Willis involves a boy who is shot during a hunting accident.
