Elf on the Shelf & Picture Books about the holidays

Discussion started on

Hi all, My mom just emailed me to ask whether "Elf on the Shelf" is a good Christmas book for my 3 and 4 year old nephews. I don't know much about it, but it seems to be part of a marketing package. I'd love to recommend other options. So...

Any feelings on "Elf on the Shelf" for 3 and 4 year old boys?

Any other recommendations for holiday-themed pictures books? Would love to hear all suggestions, but particularly interested in more fun holiday stories than religious stories.

Thank you!

Jan Brett has written a lot of fun Christmas-y books like The Wild Christmas Reindeer and Trouble with Trolls. They are beautifully illustrated. My kids also love Peter Spier's Christmas! It's a wordless PB with tons of visual narrative to look at. I'm afraid it may be out of print, but it is one to look for at the library. And of course, it is hard to beat How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Hope you find something great!

Another wordless Christmas book is The Snowman by Raymond Briggs.  It was English, and my kids loved it, but it may be out of print.   There's  Carl's Christmas, wordless and featuring the dog Carl.  I think it's by Alexandra Day.  Susan Jeffers ilustrated a beautiful version of Robert Frost's "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," which is wintery and subtly Christmas-y.  Owl Moon by Jane Yolen is a gorgeous winter book.  There are surely lots of newer books, but these are old favorites.
The Jan Brett books are wonderful, and so is her website, which I think is just http://www.janbrett.com

Giving The Elf on the Shelf is more like giving a new tradition than a new book. We like doing it, but it is more than just a bedtime story. S she has to decide if she just wants to give a story or a tradition.

My daughter's best friend had Elf on a Shelf and I agree, it is a tradition... and one you may find you have to stick to for many years! When I learned about how it worked I thought it was rather lovely but the best friend's mum said that it could get tricky sometimes sticking to the rules. It seemed fun to me.

AUNTIE CLAUS by Elise Primavera is great. The others in that series are really fun too.

Am I the only one that finds the Elf on a Shelf creepy? We had similar elves when I was a kid. I thought those were creepy too. *shudder*
