I'm reading one right now called The Secret Country, book 1 in The Eidolon Chronicles. Here's the first paragraph of the blurb: Ben wants a Mongolian Fighting Fish more than anything. But when he goes to Mr. Dodd's Pet Emporium with his hard earned savings, he buys a cat instead. He doesn't have a choice, really. The cat insists.

It's fun so far!

Hairaplenty, those are both more tween/lower YA, but yes, they're both very funny.

My son enjoyed the Big Nate books, the Alcatraz books by Brandon Sanderson, Ordinary Boy and its sequels by William Boniface, Calvin & Hobbes (ha), Pendragon series by DJ McHale (he says it can be funny, but there are some not-so-funny parts too), Guys Read: Funny Business -- to name a few.

Many of these books are on my 8 year old's shelf. Is 8 considered MG?

It's been a while since I've read Storky (by our own Debby Garfinkle), but I remember it as solidly YA, not really younger YA, and wouldn't think its content appropriate for an 8 year old. But Debby's Zeke Meke chapter book series is definitely in that age range, with a funny male MC.

Thanks a lot for recommending my books!!! Cindy is right that Storky is a YA, but my Zeke Meeks series is geared to kids in elementary school. I second the David Lubar and Louis Sachar recommendations and also recommend Gordon Korman's funny books and Sanford Wong Flunks Big-Time by Lisa Yee. My boys and I enjoyed all these.

I'm glad I checked in here  - am in the process of working on my first MG with a male protagonist - I did like Artemus Fowl though it did surprise me that a teenage mc would be a criminal.

Brandon Mull has great MG books with with male MCs--The Beyonders comes to mind first, The Candy Shop Wars and his best series by far, Fablehaven. Of the three, I'd say the Candy Shop Wars is probably best for the younger audiences. Eight years old is perfect for it. The Beyonders and Fablehaven would be on the older MG side with Fablehaven maybe stretching into the lower YA, depending on the kid of course.

I highly recommend the Whole Nother Story books by Cuthbert Soup.
My almost 11 year old loves these. They're hilarious--plus it's about being on the run from the government and time travel!

ameyers, Artemis is an anti-hero, and a really well-written one. Usually, I hate books with anti-heroes but Colfer does a good job of making Artemis just sympathetic enough. Later books introduce an array of other villains who push Artemis into the hero camp.
