Need Spanish book ideas

Discussion started on

My teenager is taking Spanish over the summer. Her teacher wants her to read a book (in English) that's about or in some way involves the Spanish/Hispanic culture. My daughter would prefer a YA as opposed to adult book. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!!!

Isabel Allende did a young adult book. I haven't read it, though... Then there's Esperanza Rising.

Some more here that I came across while trying to find the title of Esperanza:

Anything by Francisco X. Stork (he wrote Irises).
Also Sandra Cisneros -- House on Mango Street -- free verse.
Franzilla's idea is great :)

The Dreamer by Pam Munoz Ryan. It's a fictional work, based on the childhood of Pablo Neruda. It's really a beautiful book. Perhaps a bit young - depending on your daughter's age. Then again, I'm 33 and I adore this book. :)

I really enjoyed What Can't Wait by by Ashley Hope Perez. It's about a Mexican teen who struggles between excelling in math and applying to college and being the "good girl" her family expects her to be, getting married and having children.
