Silly question - sub length

I feel ridiculous asking this question. I have been studying the submission process to death, but have yet to see the answer.... so here it goes:
When submission guidelines request the "first ten pages", does that refer to 10 .doc pages or 10 book pages? If book pages, is that 250-300/pg?

Thanks for humoring me.  :-|

Good, that's what I have been doing. Not sure why I started questioning myself all of a sudden.  :duh  Thanks!
