Has anyone ever received a fiction acceptance but not gotten a bear card? I have a ms with them that I think will ultimately get a rejection because I haven't gotten a bear card, but I would love to have some hope!  :)

I don't have experience submitting fiction to Highlights, but I received an acceptance on a non-fic piece and never got a bear card. I hope that helps a little!

Best of luck!

Seven weeks is nothing, as another poster said.  Publishing moves s-l-o-w-l-y.  There should be a street sign in front of publishing houses that says
SLOW
Editors

(comma omission intentional)
And yes, I've had an acceptance without a bear card. I've also had a rejection after getting a bear card (more than once).

Back in 2004 I submitted a fiction piece to them. In 2005 I received a acceptance, I don't even know if they were doing bear cards then LOL.

Thank you all for your responses and for giving me some hope! I'm keeping my fingers crossed! :thanx:

Wendy, Highlights sometimes sends a postcard with bears if they're seriously considering a manuscript and it will take a while to get back to you with a final decision.

I think back then Highlights was sending what authors called "scale cards." They apparently had a picture of a balance scale on them and something about your piece still being weighed in the balance. It was when I was first starting to sub to magazines, so I never saw one myself, but I heard other writers refer to them. Maybe one of the long-timers will chime in about them?

I'm pretty sure the "bear cards" are sent when a first reader passes the manuscript along to the appropriate editor. IF your piece lands on the desk of the appropriate editor without that first reading (because you have the right editor's name on it or you have sold them things before or they recognize your name or a friendly comet  :flame: managed to smuggle you past the grumpy viking :grrr then you skip over the step that prompts a "bear" card and simply get either a rejection or an acceptance. I'm pretty sure that's how it works...I could be wrong. I've been wrong once or twice before. But I think that's it.  :grin3

Sorry, Starfish! Rejections stink. :(  Best thing you can do is get something back out there. Maybe read a few issues to get inspiration.

So sorry Stafish. Yes, do keep trying. It took me 3 years of subbing before they finally bought one of mine(mine is with High Five). NOW I am 'about' to have sale #2. Just sent the editor the last few changes and she said we will be good to go(sure hope that means a contract in editor language? we will see) But anyways, read their magazines over and over again and keep subbing to them --- it will happen!

Sorry, Starfish. As Sharon says, keep on trying. I remember having several rejections and after a few times there was a little note saying, "try us again" and I kept at it and they've been wonderful to work with.

Thank you, Jody, Sara, Diana, Schriscoe, and Vijaya. I did enjoy my one fiction acceptance with HL a couple of years ago. I just hope it wasn't a fluke. I haven't had much time to sub though (twin toddlers). At any rate, I've moved on to another project. :)

Congratulations, Schriscoe! What wonderful news!

Sharon, minibooks? That's wonderful!

Thanks for the encouragement on the bear card, ladies, but let's wait to see if these bears materialize. But I do so love them even if it's not a sure thing.

The bear card are so cute and so much fun! Minibooks are the little stories in the back of HIgh Five that can be pulled out folded up and made into a little book. They are cute. Both of my sales are counting stories so it works well for the minibook.
