My daughter and i have written a wonderful( i think) picture book. but we are not quite sure if it could be a chapter book heavily illustrated. we are new at this, and any help or input would be greatly appreciated. in fact, i'm so glad to be at this point, i'm sure i'll have a ton of questions. thanks.

Might I suggest that you hit the library and bookstore and look for work similar to your own. Read a bunch of chapter books and picture books on similar topics or themes and see how your work fits in.

These days, picture books are generally under 500 words. A chapter book is meant for new readers -- think Junie B. Jones, Nate the Great -- they usually come in series.

You have been given some great links to info. At this point, it's probably best that you get yourselves acquainted with the different types of children's books.
