Please note that SCBWI PAL members may freely post information about their upcoming books on this board. It has been moved here from the PAL area of the board so that all SCBWI members can see the posts. The books will get much more exposure this way. Posts and/or threads about books published by people who are not PAL members will be removed without notice because only PAL member books are allowed to be announced on this board.

PAL stands for "Published and Listed." These are books published by traditional publishing houses that do not charge money to authors or illustrators.

PAL is a SCBWI membership category. You certainly qualify, Betsy. Here's the link to the application for PAL status: https://www.scbwi.org/pal-publishers/

Hi Shirley and/or Robin--

Sara Rutenberg at SCBWI assures me that I'm PAL. She doesn't know what the problem is. So should I just assume that you guys (or Josh) will get this taken care of?

Thanks! (I know it's unbelievably petty, but I DO want to see my little star.)

Once the programmers have written and implemented the PAL login program we will let everyone know in the NEWS box of the message board and then when PAL SCBWI members log back in they will all get their stars. A few of us have manually given ourselves PAL status just so you will all know what to look for once that program is in place. The programmers are working on MANY things right now, so we can't give you a definite time when your PAL status will be active. But we do thank you for your patience and rest assured, it will be done as soon as they can manage to get it done!

I have signed a contract with a publisher on the PAL list but do not have a release date and my contract actually says the title is ''tentative''. Am I still able to apply for PAL status? Do I send the contract to someone or does someone check with the publisher? Thanks, Keila

Once you have a signed contract you may submit your info for PAL status. Check the SCBWI website for the form and fill that out. That was all I had to do.

I followed the instructions with logging out/in, and still don't have my stars. I also filled out the PAL form on the site, but apparently didn't have to do that, since I already listed my book.

Don't know if it's a big deal that I don't have PAL and region stars, but I don't.

You should have them, Stephanie. If you have made triple sure that your email and passwords are exactly the same for both your SCBWI profile and discussion board profile, and logging out and in following the instructions (pasted below) doesn't fix it, then we'll have to ask Josh to look into it. Please let us know!!

1) MAKE SURE your passwords and emails in both your SCBWI profile and your Blueboard profile are exactly the same.2) Log off of both SCBWI and the Blueboard3) Go to this link - www.scbwi.org/boards4) Log onto JUST the Blueboard using ONLY the login box under the words *Welcome Guest* and using your *email address*, not your username. 5) Your SCBWI stars plus your Region and any other SCBWI categories (PAL, RA etc.) that you are eligible for should now be in your profile.

Just saw this post. Changed password, logged in with email, and now it works. Thanks, Arty!!

2 questions:

1. Are our user names not able to be used to log in anymore? (Asking so I don't accidentally use that anymore.)

2. Unrelated: Is the quote button broken? It isn't working for me on Quick-Reply or regular reply. I also get an X on the upper right hand of the page when I try to use the quote.

Thank you!!

p.s. I was able to see a few of the regional boards when I wasn't logged in. Not sure if it's supposed to be that way, but thought I'd let you know, just in case.

Hi, Stephanie,

Great questions!

1) Once you have logged in correctly, you might be able to use your user name instead of your email to log in. But if that doesn't give you your SCBWI boards (and green stars) then you should go back and log in with your email again instead.

2) Yes. The quote button IS broken right now. It's very high on the list of things that need to be fixed. In the meantime, we've found if you go into your profile and turn OFF the Quick Reply feature, you can use quotes - as long as you are only quoting one person and as long as you do NOT click on Reply or Quick Reply before you click on the quote button. We hope to have this feature fixed soon!

3) When it comes to the regional boards, each board is set up according to the wishes of the Regional Advisor of that board. Some of them want their boards to be open to everyone, some want their boards only available to SCBWI members and others want only the people in their regions to be able to see and access their boards. That's why you could see a few even when you didn't have SCBWI access.

Thanks for asking these questions. It helps us to make sure we get everything working correctly again.

While I am a published SCBWI member (I've published both articles and illustrations in acceptable magazines, including but not limited to the SCBWI Bulletin), I'm not sure if that means I can promote my new indie published book here. Does anyone know?

Hi Shevi,

If you are not PAL, you still have the option of posting your good news on the kidlit good news board or the promotional news board. We do ask that a member have five quality posts before posting in those areas. This is to prevent drive by posters since those boards are open to the public.

Welcome!

Hi,

Does the PAL status apply only to published children's books? For instance, since I've published an adult non-fiction book, do I qualify? Thank you!

Stephanie, here's the description of PAL (from the SCBWI guidelines -- emphasis mine):

P.A.L. stands for "Published and Listed." This level of membership is open to those whose books, articles, poems, stories, illustrations, photographs, films, television or electronic media for children have been commercially published by one of the organizations listed in the SCBWI Market Surveys.

So just to clarify, if you have self-published books you are not eligible for PAL status?

That's correct, Sam. But if you're traditionally published in the future, you may certainly apply for PAL status.

Sam, if your books are self published by you, they don't currently qualify. But some small publishers are also using the term indie, and some of them may qualify. If you think your publisher meets SCBWI's criteria but they aren't listed you can make a request. SCBWI will check them out and if they qualify they will be added.
