Does anyone know of a website for baby names?  I used to have a good baby name book that I sometimes used to find character name ideas.  But I loaned it out and never got it back. ::)

Thanks in advance!

lj,

The Census Bureau has a cool section of its website that lists names according to popularity by year for the last sixty years or so.  The older ones are top ten or top fifty, I forget which, and the more recent years are top 500.

I can't find it right now, but here's another one:

http://www.babynamesearch.com/first-names.htm

I just typed "baby names" into google and found this one right away.  It looks fairly comprehensive.

Thanks Anne Marie and ClaraRose!  This helps a lot.  If I'm not careful I could spend too much time at these sites.  Kinda fun looking up meanings and such.

I use

http://www.babycenter.com/babyname/

I can select the number of syllables, first letter (for those oh-so-frowned upon illiterative names), and ethnic origin. But my favourite feature is the reverse look-up for meaning.

Do you have a character in one of your stories that is especially brave? How about one of the following names:

1.   Baldwin   Teutonic   Male   Brave friend
2.   Balendin   Latin       Strong, brave
3.   Barnard   German   Male   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
4.   Barney   Hebrew   Male   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
5.   Barny   Not available or unknown   Male   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
6.   Bern   German   Male   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
7.   Bernadette   French   Female   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
8.   Bernadine   Teutonic   Female   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
9.   Bernard   Teutonic   Male   Brave bear
10.   Berne   German   Male   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
11.   Bernie   German   Male   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
12.   Berny   Not available or unknown   Male   Form of BERNARD - brave bear
13.   Brazil   Irish       Brave, strong in conflict
14.   Casey   Gaelic       Brave
15.   Devlin   Gaelic   Male   Brave
16.   Donnelly   Celtic   Male   A brave black man
17.   Gaylord   French   Male   Brave
18.   Gerard   German   Male   spear-brave
19.   Jabari   African   Male   brave
20.   Keena   Not available or unknown   Male   Brave
21.   Kenelm   English   Male   brave helmet
22.   Leander   Greek   Male   Brave Man or Lion Man
23.   Marcello   Latin   Male   Brave
24.   Maynard   Teutonic   Male   Powerful, brave
25.   Tracey   Greek       Brave
26.   Valencia   Latin   Female   Bravery
27.   Willard   Teutonic   Male   Brave

have any of you ever tried using the index of an atlas/map for names?  I've come up with lots of names using cities/counties from the back of my handy atlas given to me each year by my friendly insurance agent (I aught to get something for all the money I spend on insurance each year!)  How about Colton Vegas?   Cotter Washington?  Covina Covington?  All names of cities or counties in the United States.

(okay, I lost my baby name book too  :P and it is easier for me to find the huge atlas!

Bballmom, that would be a fun way to get names!

For the last name of the family in my current WIP, I opened up the phone book and scanned till I found the perfect one.

The first names of the siblings was trickier, but thanks to all the helpful sites above, I think I've got a few.

I spend a lot of time on the baby name site looking for the perfect name. Right now I'm happy with all the names in novel except one of the main characters and their last name.  ??? I've been working for months with "Smith" as a place holder. Eventually I'll have to do some research and replace it. Maybe I'll try that atlas trick.  :)

Funny HB, about using the name "Smith" as a place holder.   :)

My mom used to tell the story that when she was little, there was a bully that use to tease her, who had the last name Smith.  She always said it was a dumb, boring name and she never marry someone with that name.  So, of course, she grew up and fell in love with my dad, Leland Smith.  :P
