I was having a hard time coming up with a title that felt just right for a poem I recently sold to Carus (specifically, Ladybug). While back-and-forthing and brainstorming some titles with the editor, she told me (when turning down one of my title suggestions) that they try to avoid titles with punctuation or CAPS (my title suggestion included one word in all caps, ellipsis, and an exclamation point).

Not that a title alone would = an R, if they liked the poem itself...but thought it would be useful info to share.

I'm curious- did they not like the title you had or did you send it in without a title (and now you have to think of one)?

You're welcome, guys, happy to share info here:-) Cindy, they asked for a specific revision on the original poem, and once I made the change they requested, the title no longer fit.
And Diana, the word was...FUN!

Interesting. Is that guideline just for poems, or for anything? FWIW, I sold them an article with an exclamation point in the title, and they didn't change it.

I'm not sure, Ruth...but of course she didn't say *never*, just "usually avoid".
