I can't seem to stop redoing my illustrations. How do you stop yourself from going crazy by constantly critiquing your work and then wanting to redo it?!

It's done when you have to send it to the client.

It's never done. You eventually have to send it though. Send it when it's deadline time, or when you aren't improving anything by making changes. Also, there will be more changes later, so if you find something you want to change after you send it, there's still time.

Good luck!

But, but, but, what if there is no client? What if you are just daring to even put your website out there?!

Then you either need to close your eyes and jump off the cliff ... or have someone push you.

It is so hard the first time (well, every time, really, but the first is hardest). My advice is to go in with both feet, expecting that you will have to keep changing things (especially the website) as you go along. But if you never start, you will never get a rejection with positive feedback, or an offer of representation, or a contract! Everyone starts somewhere (have you seen early Peanuts comics or Simpsons cartoons - they show just how much things change over time). There will most likely be rejection (it's publishing) but if you go in knowing that, it might help you prepare for the next story, or the next submission, or even the next blog post.

So go ahead, jump!

Or if you want, I could push you.

Jumping/being pushed it is then! And thank goodness, Vijaya, that you don't want to kick my butt too! That is what you meant when you said, "No buts," correct?!  :hahaha

It's just so much easier with writing. Because although there are still different styles, I would say it's not quite as subjective. Some well-received art is the equivalent of writing gibberish (ie it doesn't follow any rules at all) while other not-so-well received art might be meticulous and skilfully done, you know? I know I'm generalising but I do think with words there's more of a structure to follow. With pictures, you can just do absolutely anything! Any colours, any shapes, any medium... it's all a bit overwhelming.

But, ahem, yes, okay. Thank you! Ready, steady... jump!

Just do it!

Art being published goes in cycles and styles come in and go out just like fashion. Just stay true to you, develop your own unique voice and keep moving forward. Same as writing, just without words to count. (A picture is worth a thousand words - or something like that.)

There's a softness and sweetness to your work. I love your family in the snow and the owl . . . love 'em.

It's done when you try doing more to it and it takes away from it instead of improving it. Looks like all of it's done to me.

I love your work, so soft, so simple, so sweet.  You need to take everything your inner critic says with a grain of salt, then tell him/her to be quiet & just do it!  I suspect a deadline helps too.

I clicked over to your site and had to comment. The snow series is so enchanting, and I just love the one with the hug. It's sweetly magical. So I'm cheering you on from my little corner of the Internet :)

Cynthia, that is an AWESOME idea. If I redo, and it doesn't do it for me, then I know it's time to stop! Genius. Thank you!

Barbara, that owl is so cool! How did you do that?!

Jan, thank you!

I got so happy after reading all these that I did a couple of new snow illustrations... and I'm happy to say that they both felt done when I'd done them. Yay!
