Brands of butter in the US

Hi gang. Are you able to tell me the popular brand names of butter or margarine in the US? Household names, 1-2 words if possible (so no 'I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!'-type names please  ;) ). I'm using it as a descriptive nickname for something (I'll be giving context), so I'm hoping there's one that's short and catchy and known to most people.

Thanks!

The one I see most often is Darigold. (But I'm not from the USA, just cross-border shop.)

Hope that helps!

Land O' Lakes is the first one that comes to mind. I mostly buy off-brand, and most other names that come to mind are oil spreads or margarine, not actually butter.

Another vote for Land O' Lakes. I've lived in ten states and what brands a grocery store stocks totally depends on who their supplier is. I don't know that there is really a single standout brand that EVERYONE will know. But the one brand I've seen in more places I've been than anything else (and not all places have had it) is Land O Lakes. Which abbreviates on the pricing tag on the shelf to LOL.

I've heard of Darigold but never Country Crock. And yes, I do buy real butter.

Yes, Land O Lakes was the one that came up first when I googled, which won't really work for my nickname (and might confuse non-US readers). Something like Darigold works better because it *sounds* like butter (IYKWIM) even if you've never heard of it before. BUT...I think it's easier if I reword my sentence. Don't want anyone getting hung up on it when it's not that important.

I appreciate the suggestions though. Thanks!

If you're opening it to non-butter spreads, there's Parkay.

Blue Bonnet (I'm out here in Tillamook land, but I like the name 'Blue Bonnet' for a story).

I've never heard of Darigold. (I live in the upper Midwest.) Land O' Lakes would be my top pick, but since it doesn't work, everyone around here knows Blue Bonnet. Or if it can be margarine, there's Fleischmann's.

Blue Bonnet is still a margarine/spread company. There does not seem to be actual butter in its product line. http://www.bluebonnet.com/products/regular-stick-margarine.jsp

FWIW, America's Test Kitchen rates Land o Lakes No Salt butter as one of the best around, including pricey craft butters.

I've never heard of most of the brands mentioned above (I expect they're regional), but Land o' Lakes, definitely. (I live in New England).

In eastern PA, Land O Lakes and also Keller. That one's probably regional.

I've never heard of any of the butters mentioned above other than Land O' Lakes.  I have heard of the spreads/margarines.

Land O Lakes seems to be everywhere, and I second the mention for Keller's in Pennsylvania.

I've seen Kerrygold in a lot of stores both in Florida and Maryland & Pennsylvania but it is like a "gourmet" butter that gets just a smidgen of shelf space. It's often recommended by cooking magazines when they're like "Get FANCY BUTTER" so I'd assume it is widely available at decent grocery stores.

(My grandma only ever buys Land O Lakes and I have to admit, I buy local grass-fed organic butter here and yeah, it's delicious and all, and yet...there is something about Land O Lakes!)

Breakstone's and Land o' Lakes are probably biggest here - those are butter.

Smart Balance, Smart Beat, Country Crock, Mother's and Flieschman's are on the shelves (along with that long named one) as butter substitutes - some advertise heart health.

Store's also have their own brands.

Thanks, everyone!  :love5: I've reworded the line I needed it for as I think it might have just created confusion for the reader. But now I have a good collection of butter brands for future manuscripts, should I need it!  ;D

Kerrygold is Irish.

I'm in Pennsylvania so it's Keller's or Land O Lakes.
