I'm trying to add some nonfiction back matter to a fiction PB. Sheesh, I respect you NF writers! Hard stuff.

Any suggestions for good commercial fiction picture books that have well-done NF back matter? How-to, explanation, activity?

It seems like Sylvan Dell (now renamed something else) does a lot of this. Check out this title from John Himmelman: http://www.amazon.com/Tudley-Didnt-Know-John-Himmelman/dp/1934359041

If I remember correctly, Barb Rosenstock's recent book, THE NOISY PAINTBOX, has some back matter. I originally thought that the book was nf, but in her Author's Note she states that it is historical fiction.

I have the book at home, but I'm traveling so I can't access it right now.

Kate Messner's Over and Under the Snow is a gem on both counts: the fiction and the non-fiction back matter.

Sylvan Dell is now Arbordale and yes, they do a fantastic job with backmatter.

Bubble Homes and Fish Farts by Fiona Bayrock has more information on each animal.
Verla Kay's PBs all have a historical note in the back with fascinating tidbits.
Several multicultural books have recipes or more on the traditions in the back.

I hope this is helpful. I love a good PB with some meat in the back to whet the appetite even more.
