SCBWI's Blueboard - A Message & Chat Board

Parents of 4 to 6 year olds

Discussion started on

Would you share with me your 4 to 6 year olds' five very favorite things and their five least favorite things?

I'd also love to know one thing that they would do ANYTHING for--to get to stay up late, to get to watch a special movie, to have a favorite dessert, or whatever.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 5YO son. He loves:

1. his mother (me) (so nice when you also have teenagers in the house, lol!)
2. dad and siblings, especially if they're playing/cooking with him
3. collecting sticks on walks
4. being in charge (he's the youngest of five)
5. reading together

He hates:
1. being told to get off the computer
2. cleaning up after himself
3. sleeping alone (luckily he will now agree to share a room with siblings but sleep in his own bed)
4. being told no
5. anything "boring" (what's boring changes--but it's usually something he doesn't feel like doing but has to)

He would probably do anything to be allowed to sleep in our bed and do cartwheels all night. Sorry, not happening! :)

I have an almost-6yo. Favorites:
1. LEGOs
2. Emergency vehicles/workers
3. Dessert
4. Pools/beaches
5. Disney's Cars/Planes

Hates:
1. Putting on sunscreen
2. Being corrected
3. Vegetables
4. Baths
5. Losing at anything

He will do anything for "screen time." Anything.

Another six year old daughter here.

Five favourite things (I won't include her sister, since you've already got that as an idea!):
1) Animals. Hands-on puppy time at the local pet store, for eg, or stroking a horse etc.
2) Mac and cheese
3) Big, deep muddy puddles. With full-on rain gear to avoid any wetness. (Actually I love this too... why is it so much fun?!)
4) Exploring rock pools at the beach/the beach in general
5) Stuffed toys. Wow, I don't think she can ever have enough... if we let her, I think the whole house would be full of them.
(Ooh, and having biscuits and tea in bed with the whole family at the weekend!)

Five least-favourite things:
1) Saying goodbye to her friends after they've been over.
2) Having to get out of the bath.
3) The hairbrush. (And the hair dryer!)
4) Being told to be wait to talk when parents are in the middle of talking
5) Watching little sister get to play with the toy that she didn't want to play with right until the very moment that little sister picked it up. Drives her crazy!!!

Bribe-worthy stuff:
Reading to her from one of the chapter books we've got. Modified to add: actually I think I could bribe her with any book - not just me reading it. A new book would also do it. We read together every day but I think it's one of those treats she can never get enough of, partly because it's something we do together.
Pretend play (ie I'm a doctor and you're the patient, she loves this!)
TV She only gets to watch a couple of hours each weekend, so if I offered her some during the week, she'd jump at the chance I'm sure.

As an author/illustrator who doesn't have children, I want to say thank you for sharing these likes/dislikes! And thank you KatyD for asking!

Kellie, I mis-read one of your daughter's least favorite things as, "Wearing a cat." I had to agree with her that wearing a cat probably wouldn't be fun, and besides, I'm sure the cat would have something to say about it! Though the cat might be okay if you were wearing him/her as a blanket over your legs, while sitting in one place for a long period of time, so he/she could have a nice nap. Otherwise, not so much!

Stephanie...I probably should have put that on her "would do anything for" list....to have a cat or a dog as a pet. She really would. She would even wear a cat. Or a coat.

:)

I was like that when I was little too! I would have done anything for a cat. I had a stuffed cat, but that was different. Didn't get to have cats until I was grown up (they came with my husband). Because of allergies we won't have any more cats, but it was amazing to finally have that childhood dream fulfilled!

So, I hope your daughter can have a cat or dog some day, even if she has to wait a while. Until then, I hope she has a favorite toy she can love. :yup

My daughter is sort of typical in some ways (loves stuffed animals, sugar, and her momma) but she is also sort of a hippie, earth lovin' empath at the same time.  She'll do anything for a bouquet of flowers, loves to meditate and talk about how cool nature is, and will give away her most beloved items if she thinks it will make someone happy.  Sensitive, sensitive, sensitive.  She loves to collect rocks, hiking, and her golden doodle.

I have a five year old daughter.

Her faves

1. Playing with Legos
2. Making art/"books"
3. Playing her ukulele (terribly, I might add...)
4. Playing in the sprinkler
5. Helping to bake

Least favorite things

1. Cleaning her room
2. Washing/detangling her hair
3. Clothes with tags (sensory issue)
4. The Dark when she sleeps somewhere new without a nightlight
5. Shots

She would do ANYTHING if it meant she could have a puppy or a kitten

I have a six year old girl:

Favorites:
1. Minecraft
2. Playing at the park
3. Horses
4. Giraffes
5. Shopping

Dislikes:
1. Eating anything healthy
2. Hearing "no"
3. Anything she thinks is unfair
4. Getting her hair brushed
5. Being put on the spot

She would probably start the apocalypse if she could have her own horse. Otherwise she would do a lot for creem-ees, going to the park, going to the movies, going to the toy store.

I was at a birthday party for a 6YO at a splash park today, so I can add a couple more things they love:

water (but NOT in their eyes/on their heads!!)
shrieking loudly
Frozen (they had music on in this place and when Let it Go came on, I swear every kid started singing, including my 5YO son)
running, even though they're not supposed to (and they all run the same--on their toes, in little bursts, like gravity doesn't quite have a hold on them yet)
frosting of cupcakes (more than the actual cake)
Also, anything they are giving as a present is something they'd like to have themselves someday. But they're old enough at 6 to want it for a distant birthday, and not right now this minute.
