SCBWI's Blueboard - A Message & Chat Board

Anyone on Wattpad?

Discussion started on

I just created an account yesterday. I'm going to post a YA short story that has never found a home. Anyone else?

Here's my account. http://wattpad.com/KimberlyGGiarratano

I'd love to connect with some other authors.

I just followed you, Kim! I'm on Wattpad although I haven't done much with it yet. I'd love to hear from others what their experience has been with it. Fascinating concept.

Oh, man. I just looked at my profile. I joined in 2012.  :paperbag http://www.wattpad.com/user/writerhpinski

That sounds like a good usage for it, Kimberly. What I've heard about it is that while it's a terrific target audience--oodles of young women age 12-20--they've come to expect free content from it and can get unpleasant if an author, say, posts three chapters of a novel and doesn't post the rest for free. There seems to be a sense of entitlement that's just a bit...much.  But posting short stories that you don't intend to sell elsewhere as a way to give people a taste of your work seems like a great idea.

I joined to day, but I won't be using it much.

Lots of young/inexperienced writers on there. Considered the (supposed) age requirement, it's surprising how many writers don't understand basic punctuation.

Laura, too funny. I was going to mention Wattpad to you...I see from the comment you left on my profile that you've found your way to it!

Here's another interesting perspective from Margaret Atwood on why Wattpad works, http://www.theguardian.com/books/2012/jul/06/margaret-atwood-wattpad-online-writing

Marissa is spot-on about the demographic, which is why I haven't used it much (I write MG). What drives me absolutely nuts about the ereading habits debate is that most of the studies/surveys have focused on ereading devices when in fact many teens are reading on their smartphones. They like Wattpad (and serialized fiction in general) because they can access smaller chunks of the story at a time. The social/interactive component is also very important to this demographic so it is a perfect fit.

Hee-hee, Hilary. I'm stalking you. Appreciate the input. I might try it. Haven't been raked over the coal in a while. I'm out of practice?

I'm on there. But honestly, I think that it's like most other social media: in order to garner attention there, you must really put in the time and post frequently, interact a lot, comment and read other people's work, etc. I haven't been able to devote that kind of time to it, but I am considering doing more with it in the future.

I have a FB friend who posted the first couple of chapters of her published book on Wattpad (not sure how the copyright works for this), and she got over a million "reads" within a week or so! Her books are YA and werewolf-themed.

Jenn, that makes me want to run far, far from it. Probably obvious that I haven't done anything with it?  :yeah

I put up my novel excerpt, a short story, and 2 pieces of flash fiction. I have not interacted much on it and that is the key to getting readers. I'm just too busy. I hope I can utilize better in the future, but for now, at least my work is there for everyone to enjoy.

Wattpad seems mostly geared towards YA readers - is there any equivalent out there for MG kids?

I'm on wattpad, but I haven't posted yet. If anyone wants to follow me I'm at jlstovall4.

Anyhoo, mainly YA readers are out there now and you don't have to read others work. Wattpad is basically youtube for books. So literally millions of people go to it everyday. I know over 10 people myself who are registered but I'm the only author in the bunch. It's a great place to get recognition, but the services are free to readers. You do need to be consistent though. I'd say write the book, then afterward drop one chapter every one to two weeks to wattpad. Once I get my main novel ready I plan on releasing my 0.5 book out there.

As for MGers. I'm not sure how many are out there, but generally wherever the YA crowd goes eventually the MG crowd follows.

And the great Wattpad experiment begins! I'm live (finally), http://www.wattpad.com/story/8548964-strangetown. I'll keep you posted on how it goes for me over there.

Not that I'm aware of, mmrempen. Since you have to be 13 or older to have an account on most of these sites without parent permission, it makes it a challenge for them legally.

I think I followed everyone here, but if I missed you, re-post or PM me and I'll make sure to.  Happy New Year and happy writing, everyone!   :newyear

Bridgette, that was so nice of you to do!  :thankyou Can't be said enough. I  :love5 BBoarders!

I wonder if I'll be able to invest the time needed to cultivate reads, while balancing other social media and you know, actually  :writing3, but I find the whole concept fascinating and needed to experiment. :spock

I added.

Not I do have some of my old YA up there as well. But I'm primarily a middle grade writer. It was left over when I still considered myself a cyberpunk author. No longer the case.

I'm back up and running with a revised, more YA version of STRANGETOWN, https://www.wattpad.com/myworks

I decided to post simultaneously to tumblr to see if I can gain more traction that way. I'm making a study of this and am calling it The Great Experiment. I'll post updates on my progress.

Wattpad fascinated me. :spock

Just discovered Wattpad because my best friend does PR for them, so I immediately came over to the Blueboards and searched Wattpad to get input from my fellow SCBWIers. I'm still a bit weary of it, and I haven't published anything yet, but I look forward to connecting with you all on there. Here's my link:

Just followed you back, rebecca -- love your header image!  :love5

Anyone here know if notifications are back up and running? Last week the "so and so has posted a new story" alerts weren't going out to followers.

I love the image too! But actually I think I need to swap it out because I thought I could use it through a Creative Commons license but now I don't think so. Anyone know exactly how Creative Commons works? Or how to find good public domain images?

I don't know, Rebecca. Maybe start a new thread in Computer, Web & Tech? https://www.scbwi.org/boards/index.php?board=66.0

I need a favor Wattpaders. I just posted Chapter Two but I don't think my followers are getting alerted to a new story part being posted. Did anyone get one? I seem to recall there being a prompt to notify when you publish, but no longer. It's been awhile since I've been active. Did something change or am I misremembering?  :thankyou

I like using Pixabay (https://pixabay.com), because it's a very good source for public domain pictures. Here you can take a look at their conditions of use:

I hope it helps!
