Some Great Tips on "How Not to Start a Novel"

I think Janice Hardy's tips are some of best I've ever read. Hardy is the founder of Fiction University, and the author of the teen fantasy trilogy The Healing Wars.

They appeared in a July 2014 guest post on Writer's Digest Award-Winning author Anne R. Allen's blog. The post is titled, "Four Things to Avoid in the First Page of Your Manuscript," by Janice Hardy.

In the order she addresses them, her "things to avoid" are: having too much back-story and explanation; crafting a one-dimensional scene; using a fake opening; and having a lazy protagonist.
