Eileen Robinson and I have developed a webinar version of our one-day "Editing without an Editor" workshop, which teaches the theory and practice of revision. The webinar will happen on Thursday evenings starting October 30, skipping Thanksgiving week, and ending the first week of December.

Just like the workshop, this webinar teaches the basics of editing yourself, on your own or with the help of others, and gives students the confidence and knowledge they need to continue to learn and use self-editing methods.

Basic course details: In the first session, to give you a framework, we compare "reader response" theory and the literary criticism approach, and explore how to use reader response with manuscripts. In the second session, we move to getting feedback from other people, using critique groups and beta readers, and discuss methods for making critique groups work better. In the third session we cover and try out "big-picture" revision techniques for use to find and fix problems in plot, characterization, or pacing. In the fourth session, we move on to "tight focus," detailed editing, working on your own or with a partner as you put the final polish on a manuscript. We will give "homework" and plan to involve participants as much as possible in the sessions.

We are also offering three different critique options to workshop participants.

The workshop costs $99 for early bird registrations through October 1 or for SCBWI members registering at any time. More information and registration links:

Editing without an Editor

I'll be checking back here and will be happy to answer questions.

Thanks!

Good question, Dionna, and one I'll be adding to an FAQ I am developing.

The webinar is recorded and posted online, and people who have registered can view it (once or multiple times) as soon as it is posted, which should be the following day. So if you miss one session, it's easy to catch up. Or if you just can't make the time it's given at all, you can watch the whole thing via the archived version. Of course, you then miss out on the live experience, but the full content, and the Q&A we will do at the end of each session, will all be included.

That's an interesting question. We could do that, but why do you want to do that? Our presentations may cover what you want to ask about. And if you have a burning question about revision, you can at any time email us via the contact links on the KBR site.

[Just to clarify, we assume people will have questions about what we present or the exercises we suggest they do, so the focus for questions is on what is actually happening in the sessions.]

I see. I have an obligation on Thursdays, so was just trying to figure out how I could still have a meaningful share if I attended. It sounds like an amazing opportunity, though!

Oh, I understand. If you are not going to be able to be present for any of the sessions, you certainly can send in questions by email. We will either respond by email or fold it into the other questions (which people ask using a text chat feature, and we answer in the video window.)

[added]In general, whether you send a question by email or the text chat function, no question will go unanswered, even if we can't fit them all into the sessions. We will be sure to respond by email.

Oh, and Dionna: nice crayons!

Dionna and others,

We have now set up an FAQ page that addresses the question you had and others: http://www.kidsbookrevisions.com/editing-without-an-editor-FAQ.htm

We will update that as new questions come up.

Also, we've set up a Facebook Event page. It's a good place to go if you want to chat with other participants or ask questions, and we will be sharing all news there as well.

Hi Harold:

Can I sign up for the Editing without an Editor series and decide whether I want the critique later (before the end of the workshop series)? Or do I need to sign up for the critique at the same time I sign up for the workshop series?

Thank you!

Rebecca, the critiques are optional and you sign up for them separately. So, yes, you can sign up for the webinar now, and sign up later for a critique. You do have to register for the webinar first. Note that we are putting a limit on the number of critiques we are doing, and that's one reason to sign up for one sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the question. I'll add something about this to the critique information page.

Just a reminder that the webinar's first session is one week from tonight.

We've added a page that addresses a question several people have asked us, which is who should take it. Is the webinar for people at a particular place in their careers, or looking for a specific technique? Here's what we say:

We've done a video "sampler" that shows how the webinar works and gives some examples of what you will learn in the webinar itself.

It's free and less than 7 minutes long: http://delvelive.adobeconnect.com/p45a7pbsmb5/

If anyone has questions, please feel free to ask.
