Hi there!

I'm interested in trying my hand at an early chapter book. I'm thinking of a younger age range of 6-9. Kate DiCamillo does such a nice job with her Mercy Watson series for this group. Are there others you'd recommend reading to get a feel for the genre?

I've got a copy of the first in the Magic Treehouse series. I've also heard about Judy Moody. And I'm reading a Geronimo Stilton book to my kindergartener now. If you have some ideas for this age range of books, I'd love to hear them. Also, am I correct in identifying these as chapter books or would you call them early middle grade?

My kids liked The Secrets of Droon (series) when they were in second grade. They're for the same readership as the Magic Treehouse books.

Horrible Harry and Jigsaw Jones or Cam Jansen. The last two are mystery series.

Spiderwick Chronicles. Yes it's actually a chapter book. Now the later books become MG in length.

Judy Moody is a fun chapter book series.  The Beverly Cleary books are fun, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid is also.

I like some of the older chapter books, such as the Betsy-Tacy books by Maude Hart Lovelace. They have such lovely round characters with true emotions. And they have PARENTS! Heavens!
