I'm brainstorming a list of mushy, sentimental books.  They don't have to be pure saccharine--just books with a love message of some kind.

I'm thinking GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU, THE KISSING HAND, THE RUNAWAY BUNNY . . .

What else?

VAMPIRINA BALLERINA series (Disney-Hyperion)
SUNNY'S TOW TRUCK SAVES THE DAY (Abrams)
GROUNDHUG DAY (Disney-Hyperion, 2017)
among others

NO MATTER WHAT by Debi Gliori (also STORMY WEATHER by the same author)
ON THE NIGHT YOU WERE BORN by Nancy Tillman.
THE STARS WILL STILL SHINE by Cynthia Rylant.

LOVE YOU FOREVER, by Robert Munsch?  :eyeballs: (I am waiting for people to say how creepy that book is, which it is! As well as being kind of mushy and lovely. I'm in two minds about it!)

I Love You because You're You  by Liza Baker
I really liked That Yucky Love Thing by Micheal Catchpool. Henry in Love by Peter McCarty, and Slugs in Love by Susan Pearson are cute love theme books not about parent - child relationships.

AnneB,
I'm with you about The Giving Tree! Surely it's the most unhealthy relationship ever depicted in a picture book. Check out this video:

My favourites are Deaf Elephants by William Benton: http://www.amazon.ca/Deaf-Elephants-William-Benton/dp/0764920235

and

I Like You by Sandal Stoddard Warburg: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/i-like-you-sandol-stoddard-warburg/1100692123?ean=9780395071762

They're delightful and heart-warming. I actually broke into tears while reading Deaf Elephants in the store.

Film school grad. Time traveller. Billy Bragg fan. Canadian/Irish novelist of character-driven fiction from sci-fi to slice of life.

I agree that Salina Yoon's PENGUIN books could fit the bill. They're warm, and sweet, and touching without being overly saccharine.

For something with a slightly dark twist, there's MY MONSTER MAMA LOVES ME SO.

Also, HOW DO DINOSAURS SAY I LOVE YOU, I'D KNOW YOU ANYWHERE MY LOVE, and SOMEDAY.
