Selling Original Illustrations

What is the best practice for selling original illustrations for a children's book. Is this a common thing to do? Should they be offered right away or after a period of time following the books release?

I know one excellent artist who sells on etsy.com. Sorry I don't know more.

Yes, the illustrations are from a self published book. I retain all rights to the images.
