That's a lot of great books! The Edgars are hard to peg because they often go for a more traditional mystery, and not all the books on this list are exactly mysteries, even if there is a mystery in the plot. It's always nice when they pick a book that's a bit different than other shortlisters, but you never know.

Yes, and MG, more than any other age group, has such a wide range of reading levels. It'd be a hard call. How do you compare The Midnight Gardener (which is almost YA) with Captain Awesome and the Missing Elephants? It's almost apples and oranges.
