March 21, 2015 10-1pm, located at Pop Secret Gallery, 5119 Eagle Rock Blvd
Los Angeles, California

Learn how to illustrate a children’s book from 20 year veteran children's book illustrator Joe Cepeda.  He's illustrated for a number of books from Scholastic, Harcourt, Simon and Schuster and worked with notable authors like Gary Soto, Pam Muñoz Ryan, Arnold Adoff, Monica Brown, Julius Lester and most recently, Toni Morrison.

Here's what the class entails.

Understand how to break down a manuscript and find the best possible visual solutions to telling a great story in pictures.  Realize how to challenge yourself, discover your visual voice while maintaining consistency.

This workshop will examine proper pacing, character development, visually matching the arc of the story, sound composition and more. Find out what makes for a great book dummy you can submit to a publisher.

Joe Cepeda received his BFA in illustration from California State University, Long Beach in 1992 and also studied Engineering at Cornell University. He is the illustrator of awarding-winning picture books such as What a Truly Cool World and Nappy Hair.

Joe Cepeda received the Recognition of Merit Award for 2000 from The George G. Stone Center for Children's Books. His illustrations have appeared in publications such as The Los Angeles Times; Buzz, Inc. Magazine; and Latina Magazine. His original artwork can be viewed at Every Picture Tells a Story in Los Angeles and has been accepted into the Society of Illustrators shows in New York and Los Angeles. He is also a member of the Graphic Artist's Guild.
