I have a hand full of questions so I'm just going to leave them here as I'm aspiring to write picture books.
1. Are there any good sites/books on making a portfolio?
2. At what point do you submit said portfolio?
3. Some picture books rhyme and some do not. Is it cliche to rhyme?

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Hi Nicole!
I see you're brand new here...welcome! You can try using the search box to put in a specific term, and also, take a while to familiarize yourself with the boards. There's a LOT of info here, and it can seem overwhelming at first, but looking through the topic headings and utilizing the search box should get you started. I'm not an illustrator, so I can't offer any specific advice on portfolios (but you'll find there is an illustrator section). I can give you the short answer on rhyming PBs: they have to be perfect--rhyme/rhythm/meter + great story arc & concept--to sell. Rhyming PBs that are well written will never go out of style, IMO. But writing in rhyme is its own unique skill set with a steep learning curve. There are some excellent topic headings about rhyme if you're interested in learning more about writing rhyming PBs.
Again, welcome!

Hi Nicole,

You mention you are a writer.  Are you an illustrator as well?  You asked about creating and submitting a portfolio.  This confuses me as artists don't submit a portfolio (they would have a portfolio to show in person, but when submitting to publishers would submit sketches and finished pieces of art or a dummy) and I'm wondering if you mean something else when you talk about submitting.  If you can clarify I think you'd get more helpful answers.  :cheesy

Sorry about that. I wasn't sure how to search the boards quite yet.
As for a portfolio... I write and do some illustrations on the side but have no idea if they are what people are looking for. I guess I'm more asking in which format do writers submit their work?
