Sandwiches kids would think are gross

So I'm writing a scene in which my main characters are having a picnic with their grandparents.

The grandmother pulls out tuna salad sandwiches with bits of onion, celery, and pickles and the kids turn up their noses at them. They ask if there's anything else.

The grandmother says, "Egg salad and ____"

Not really sure what to put for the blank. Obviously something even less appetizing than the tuna sandwiches.  :dr

I've had a couple suggestions, pimento cheese and ham salad, both of which I'd never heard of until yesterday.

Are either of those something your average 8-12 year old would know about?

Any other suggestions for "gross" picnic sandwiches?

Thanks!

Olive loaf? Cow tongue? I used to work at a place that served cow tongue sandwiches. Ew.

And the tuna sounds awesome. I used to trade my lunches for tuna sandwiches. Nom nom nom.

Cow tongue sounds disgusting!  :feelbad

Never heard of olive loaf. But it sounds gross, too. Actually anything with "loaf" in the name sounds rather gross!  :shocked

I love tuna sandwiches as well, just not with onions. I can deal with pickles or celery. But I really prefer them with just cheese. I find anything added tends to overpower the flavor of the tuna.

Thanks!

My son tried tongue for the first time a month ago (in a restaurant). He said it was 'surprisingly good'

As for the sandwich, I'm guessing you don't want more fish -- sardines, salmon,...

How about pickled beets? They're quiet popular in sandwich places that serve falafals now, and they'd wreck the whole sandwich.

Also, salmon could work. There's a restaurant on the beach that sells fish and chips and chowder and my MC was trying to convince his grandparents to get him that. So I think it'd be funny that he wants fish, then gets fish, but it's not the fish he wants!  :hahaha

I used to eat tongue when I lived in New Zealand. It's actually pretty good. You just don't want to see it in the package before it's prepared. That is gross.

I would have run for the hills if someone had offered me anything with horseradish on it.

I was wondering about avacado. Although my kids like it now, as children they hated it.

How about a tomato and cheese sandwich? Very big in England, but I don't think many kids here would be favorably impressed.

Pimento loaf, souse, Vegemite, Marmite, deviled ham.

Souse is definitely gross looking -- it's a chunky head cheese bound with gelatin.

Oh, my grandma made this. Grossest thing in the world! Not sure today's grandma would make it, though. I think liverwurst would totally work. I grew up with the German name, Braunschweiger. I did NOT eat it.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions!

mrh, I think you hit it on the head. What would today's grandma make? Probably not the same stuff she was subjected to as a child.  :feelbad

I decided to go with salmon. I hate canned salmon and now so does my MC. ;)

Thanks!

Tongue is a Kosher deli staple, a delicacy even.

I'm not a fish person, so I'm with your main character on the sandwiches, but find me something besides the fish and chips too please. (Actually, I'd take the tuna because of the onions and pickles overpowering it.)
