Hello SCBWI community,
My name is Steve and I have a very naive question. I am just starting out as a writer/illustrator. I have black and white line drawings and I am about to add color. Do I need to preserve a set of black and white line drawings for any reason or can I just add color to my masters drawings?
Thank you,
S

Are you in the process of building a portfolio or are you preparing a picture book dummy for a story? For the latter, you would only need a few  finished pieces.

I like to scan all my drawings when they are in the black and white stage. That way, if during the coloring stage I find that I lost/overworked/messed-up too much/ I can go back to the original and work from it again. (It also depends on what medium you are using if this works for you).

Definitely keep a copy - if there is a disaster you won't have to start from scratch.

Most of the time I keep a copy, but sometimes I don't. Depends on the medium, if I remember to do it, and if it's a project just for me, or for a dummy or book. I almost always keep the black line on a separate layer for digital files too. It's great to have a copy if you mess up, but it's up to you to decide if you want to keep a copy or not.

I keep my line work in separate files from final color files. Never know when you'll want them.
