Has anyone read this series by Colin Meloy? I picked them up at the library as I was drawn to Carson Ellis's illustrations. Now 2/3rds or so through the first one and I'm struggling to finish, and it was a chore to get this far. I really wanted to love this series, but am finding it really hard to engage, or to relate to any of the characters, and some of it just seemed hard to swallow. Should I persevere? Will the series eventually pay off?

I haven't read it, but my 10 year old (who reads EVERYTHING) read the first one, said it was okay, and doesn't have any interest in reading the others.  :shrug Interpret that as you will.

Thanks Shauna. I hate giving up on books, but there are more books than time.  :sigh

I loved the first book of the series, but I live in Portland, just across the river from the Impenetrable Forest.

Arty, I gave up on the first book, too, though it pained me to do so.

I also gave up on the first book. I was about half-way when I lost interest. I think it was the style of writing I had a hard time with. Carson Ellis is one of my favorite artists and I LOVE The Decemberists and I also think the concept is awesome...so I really wanted to like it. I give up on a lot of books, though, and often come back at a later date (sometimes years later!) and try them again and often times enjoy them.

Anyway, I really want to try again with this series, but also wondered if I was the only one who had issues (guess I'm not; too bad). Would also like to know if there is anyone who has read through the entire series. Happy reading!
