Any advice on what are the best children's magazine markets for articles on pets and/or animals?

Check out the themes for Hopscotch, Boys' Quest and Fun for Kidz. They are interested in non-fiction and have some possibilities for you.

Animals are a perennial favorite for kids, so any magazine would love to have a well-written story. Shoot for something unique instead of general.
In my Market Guide, under animals, there are at least 90 magazines listed.
Do peruse the online list our own Ev keeps: http://evelynchristensen.com/mags.html
Good luck, Vijaya

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

I submitted once to Boys Quest and they held my article until publication to see if there was room. I'll have to try them again, especially once they update their themes.

Highlights makes me nervous, because of their request for experts and references. I wrote a dog agility article a few years ago with them in mind, even had photos and permissions of young people. Unfortunately, I never sent it, and now the permissions are probably too old. Still, I did grow up reading Highlights, and so should try them too.

90 markets for animals! Wow. I obviously need to look again at my market guide.

Good to hear that many magazines are open to animal stories. Working with animals has been my passion for several years now and it'd be nice to combine writing with that love.

Allison, if you want to write a fiction animal piece, Animal Tales might be a possibility. I just posted the submission guidelines in the Tidbits section of the new issue of Writing for Children's Magazines.

Hi Allison.
I am a regular contributor to Animal Wellness Magazine and the article you described for Highlights with references and expert advice is the same criteria for AWM writers guidelines.

You can also check out my article on writing for the pet market here:

Thanks for the additional suggestions!

Evelyn, I just subscribed to your newsletter. It's a wonderful resource that I've been forgetting to check.

Fiction would certainly interest me! I only asked about nonfiction, because overwhelmingly this seems to be what markets want.

Naddie, how did you break into Animal Wellness? Their magazine really appeals to me and I just ordered a sample copy.

Hi Allison,

You asked how did I break in? I had already garnered published clips from other pet magazines and sent in a query pitching an idea. If you don't have pet specific clips that's OK. But do query with a pitch.

All the best. :goodluck

Do online clips help? I'm a regular blogger for one of our local animal welfare groups and have several posts published through them.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll look into how to create a pitch. :-)

In researching for some local articles, I realized that I might be able to use my research to submit to one of the regular features that Highlights carries. A reason why it's good to know a magazine! We'll see what happens.  ::-)

Hi Allison,

Blog posts may or may not count as clips. It depends on the market and the blog. Was the material vetted and edited before it was published? In any case, it certainly won't hurt for you to mention it as it demonstrates your expertise in the field.

Debbie, hi.

Sorry I missed your response back in November! All my posts were edited before published. As for whether they were vetted, some of my articles were written only after contacting veterinarians and/or other experts in the animal welfare field. In addition, although all of my articles have been published locally, they have been used by various animal groups. So, I'm at least growing an expertise in the field.  ::-) Thanks.
