I recently attended a workshop on voice with Patti Gauch at the Highlights Foundation. If I was a little unsure of how to create voice before, I'm not any longer. Patti made it so very easy to comprehend by giving us example after example and then having us do writing exercises.

If you haven't been to a Highlights Foundation workshop, I recommend it. Kent Brown also offers generous scholarships.  Boyds Mills is in the Pocono Mountains of northeast Pennsylvania. Attendees get their own cabins, meals and transportation to and from the airport or train station plus lots of input.

Thanks for the recommendation, stella-michel. I see she is offering this class again in May.

I'd love to go to a Highlights workshop sometime, but unfortunately, it won't be this year.

Stella, how wonderful. Do you have any tidbits to share?

Vonna, Highlights Workshops are amazing. Clearly defined, organized, and boy do they pamper you! They also give out scholarships so keep that in mind.

Patti had so much to say about voice. Here are a few notes, a few tidbits, Vijaya.

She said to be aberrant and don't iron out your voice, that the bumps and impurities are what make your voice.

Voice is usually conversational and intimate.

"Attitude should drive the story, the chapters. Voice has opinions, thoughts."

We did four writing exercises which we shared with a partner (a different partner after each exercise). I don't want to say much more but it was so worthwhile.

Anyhow, there you go. Just a few examples.

Highlights is also on my bucket list. Money isn't the only issue, childcare comes into play too. One day...
