Hi everyone,

This may be a long shot, but I'm hoping this might ring a bell with someone.  While at summer camp back in 1979, I read a poem about a skunk and I recall a line of the poem that said something like, "but his mother smelled nice!" or something like that. I think the poem was part of a book of poems but I can't remember anything else. I was totally homesick being away at camp for 2 weeks as a 9 year old.  The camp held a talent show and I was so super shy to do anything in the show, but my kind camp counselor knew I liked to read and asked me to pick a poem to read in the talent show. I was so nervous but I did it and felt really good about it. It was quite an accomplishment for this shy, homesick little girl to read this little skunk poem in front of everyone!  I would love to find this poem and would treasure it as a memory of that time. I've searched all over for it and hope someone here recalls this poem. Not much to go on, I know, but thanks for any ideas it might spark!

I hope you find it. I had a similar quest for a favorite book entitled "Twig." I don't know why I loved it so much, but I did find it on Amazon. And I found out that it was written by someone who lived in my home town in 1942. It is not written like our  kids' books these days, but I love my new-found copy anyway.  :typing

Thanks, Ama!  So glad you found your childhood book and how cool that it was written by someone from your home town!  Books have a magical way of taking us back to our childhood.  I'll keep searching for this little poem!

Sue G, any chance it was this one?

There were two little skunks
Named "In" and "Out."
One day In was out
And Out was in.
The mother skunk asked
Out to go out and bring In in.
So Out went out and
Brought In in.
"How did you find In so fast?"
She asked.
Out just smiled and said, "Instinct."

Katie, thanks so much for posting this poem.  It's not the poem I recall, but it's so cute!  I'm going to share it with my kindergarten class - they'll love it!!

Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Hi Sue, I'm not sure what the poem is, but you could try putting your question on Stump the Bookseller! Let us know if you find it!

Thanks so much for the link, Deena!  What a cool site!  I will post if I find out anything about my little skunk poem.   It will be fun to read through the other posts and try to help others find the books they remember from childhood.

Thanks!
