I'm looking for extremely sparse (100 words or less) character-driven picture books like No, David! by David Shannon. Also, any insight into why this book works (since it doesn't have a character arc)? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Cynthia Rylant's Brownie & Pearl books are under 100 words. I think these are too short -- not enough there, there, even when my daughter was 3.

I think No, David! works because of the humor. Writer/illustrators often can have much sparser texts because their illustrations do the work.

I'll have to check out the Brownie & Pearl books. I read my 20 month old No, David! and she was captivated. She even gave that satisfied smile at the end. It was so interesting to see because she does not often stick with a book to the end.

Duck Duck Moose by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen might qualify as character driven. As I recall it's all about Moose's feelings in a way. I think it only contains the three words in the title. The illustrations tell the story.

I think No, David works because every kid can identify with being told no.

Not sure if Olivia is less than 100 words, but it is certainly very short.
