My poem submission has now crossed the 4 month mark and math puzzle has crossed the 2-month mark. I am expecting that the puzzle submission also has a long wait ahead before I hear anything on that one too (also, holidays will be here in couple of weeks!)

Did anyone hear anything yet? Or at least revision requests, may be?

No, not from Highlights. Normally, I would've heard by now (3.5 months) for fiction. Maybe they're behind?

I've been waiting 6 months on a poem and still haven't heard. Way longer than they usually take. I guess they're behind. I don't expect to hear anything before the holidays.

Good luck!

For any/all who are waiting, I just saw this posted on the response times board for Highlights:   If your submissions were fiction, sit tight. JoĆ«lle Dujardin was out on leave Aug-Oct. She's behind with her manuscript reviews, but no doubt working hard to catch up.

Thanks CarrieLee! It is nice to know the reason behind the long wait, makes the wait more tolerable I guess :) I wonder if non-fiction/puzzles have similar delays too?

I've had a puzzle out to Highlights since early June, but I'm patiently waiting. :)  I do wonder, however, if the ease of submitting by Submittable has increased the number of subs they are getting.

AzGuy, that is quite a wait! I hope you hear good news at the end of it :)

Mine has been out since October, so I think I have a long wait ahead.

Just got an email from editor that they're very swamped but determined to catch up.

One rejection (poem subbed 6/19) and a couple more still under consideration.

I got form rejections yesterday on all three of my poems that were subbed in June. So, yep, I think they're trying to get things cleaned out before the end of the year.

Best wishes to the rest of you.  :goodluck

Form R from High Five on a fiction sub - 4 and a half months. Not how I wanted to start the new year. :(

Diana, Ev and Starfish...sorry for the rejections!

They must be reading in batches because my submission was back in Aug and I haven't heard back from them yet. Status still shows In progress on submittable.

Yes, good luck! I have one fiction piece from early August and one puzzle from early October. I think it will be a while before I hear anything on the October submission.
#74 - January 04, 2017, 09:57 AM

:twitch   :twitch   I still have two out, one fiction, one poem, from back in June. Based on the recent spate of rejections, I don't know whether to be hopeful or "prepare for the worst".  Good luck (and a dollop of patience) to everyone still waiting.

Checking in to see if there are any updates from folks who are still waiting?

My sub is approaching the 5.5 months mark and still shows "In Progress".

Not on my August sub. But the editor did email me to say that one of my previously accepted pieces (fiction) will appear in the September issue this year! Yay!

I think it will be a while before we hear back on "in progress" subs. I had read in a market guide that Highlights gets more than a thousand subs a month... I can only imagine if someone's away for a couple of months, that's a lot to catch up on... Working on new stuff in the mean time - and for the first time, writing some books, too!

Yay Starfish! Happy for you!

Phew...1000 subs is a lot. I wonder if they have some editors for fiction and non-fiction pieces ? I have 2 non-fiction with them and one fiction.

It's my understanding there are different editors for fiction, poetry and nonfiction. I've heard response times for nonfiction are generally a lot longer than fiction (I've never subbed nonfiction there though).

Sorry to those who have had recent rejections.

My puzzle submitted in early June 2016 is still showing in-progress. I sent two poems in mid October - they also show in-progress.

However, a poem accepted in September 2011 is being published in March! I'm looking forward to seeing that!

Thank you everyone!

And congrats Guy - I saw that the March issue was out in the library this week. I'll have to have a read next time I'm in.
