I'm looking for a book for an eight year old boy for a Christmas present. Something like Phantom Tollbooth for his age, something funny, clever at times, and has a great adventure. No MG bathroom humor, please. Any suggestions?

My son loved the Encyclopedia Brown series at that age. (though, no magical elements, if that's what you're looking for)

And a fantastic adventure story for that age is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. My son and I read it together when he was 8 and he was completely captivated.

Anything by Roald Dahl would be my first suggestion. But if you are looking for something published recently, maybe The Mysterious Benedict Society or Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library?

Yes to Roald Dahl and Kate di Camillo.

My kids loved Punished! by David Lubar. It's full of puns. Very funny.

The Chronicles of Narnia series is really, really good for this age as well. Great to read aloud.

How about Sideways Stories from Wayside by Sachar?

AN ORANGUTAN'S NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS Pelican 2016

If he's into sci-fi, BOUNDERS by Monica Tesler and SECRETS OF THE DRAGON TOMB by Patrick Samphire were both fun MG reads (the latter is a bit more lighthearted adventurey, the former more sciencey)

I loved all of these.

HOW TO OUTRUN A CROCODILE WHEN YOUR SHOES ARE UNTIED by Jess Keating, about a family living in a zoo, is very funny.

THE MIDNIGHT WAR OF MATEO MARTINEZ by Robin Yardi is funny with heart, and features modern chivalry and talking skunks.  :horse

SMELLS LIKE DOG by Suzanne Selfors is a funny adventure story about a boy who inherits a dog and joins a secret society of adventurers.  :dogwalk

ALCATRAZ VERSUS THE EVIL LIBRARIANS by Brandon Sanderson, a wacky adventure with librarians and dinosaurs.  :library
