SCBWI's Blueboard - A Message & Chat Board

poetry and rhyming pb crit group

Discussion started on

Hi gang!

We're looking for applicants to our poetry critique group. It includes both short poems and pb-length verse. Complete info:

Poets' Garage is currently looking to fill an opening.  We are a supportive community of children's poets established in 2005.  We are dedicated to helping each other to improve technique, become more confident and capable writers, discuss and share information, and get published.

Poets’ Garage is organized via a private message board.  Here, members are able to have general discussions, share publishing news, and of course, post poetry and write critiques.  The poetry in our workshop is as short as a couplet and as long as a thousand words.

The Garage Minimum Requirements:
- Members are to critique at least TWO poems each month.  It can be much more.
- Members are to post at least TWO poems each quarter.
- Members are to maintain a balance of critiques given to critiques received. If you have received ten critiques from the group, then you are expected to give ten critiques back to the group. Members have the freedom to choose which poems they'd like to critique.

Members are expected to be highly active. We are NOT looking for minimalists.

If you have the time to fully participate and maintain an active membership, then please send a note to Bill at:     widepe AT gmail DOT com.  He will send you an application for membership.

Thanks!

(Any questions, please ask me!) :)

Making metaphors out of molehills for over thirty years.

I know it seems daunting, but it's really just about checking that people are serious about writing and that they'll do their best to be as active as they can. Of course, activity goes up and down and that's understandable.

Sometimes it's a little slow, but overall, I have found it helpful and have made some good friends. We've had several pb's go through there that ended up selling or had some recognition.

If you want more details, you can feel free to pm me. The members are a mix of people.

I'd be thrilled if you decided to apply because I know you're a really good critiquer (and writer).

This is SO tempting to apply to!!!  :naughty Not sure if I could commit to sending in two poems each quarter though since I tend to spend lumps of time on my MG, too.

Yay, Lill!! Glad to hear it.

Sharon, I was going to ask if you wanted to apply! The poems can be short. Maybe it will help you get into the habit of subbing to magazines more often?

I'm with Jayca. I'm seven months pregnant and can't do the time commitment now--but I wish I could. Hope you have more openings in the future.

This is by far the best critique group I've ever been in and I've been in 'em in 3 states. My other groups (all in-person) were fine, but no one knew anything about rhyme, poetry, which is what I love to do. I'm in one right now in Seattle & much as I enjoy our meetings, I almost never take a rhyming ms to be critiqued. Everyone in  Poets' Garage group is completely at ease with meter and rhyme and knows how to give helpful, honest suggestions. Everyone is supportive. I'd guess that all are published in magazines and many have books. I recommend it highly if you love to write children's poetry. It's been a gift for me.
