WRITING IS WORTH EVERY PENNY

Sometimes, an unexpected gesture is a valuable reminder of why we write.

To a child, a penny can be worth a lot. It can be saved for all kinds of purchases... a toy, a bike, an ice cream treat.

That's why I was surprised after I signed a book for a child and he pulled a penny out of his pocket and handed it to me. I thanked him for his kindness and asked, "Are you sure you don't want to keep this penny for yourself?"

He didn't. To him, I guess meeting an author was worth that penny. And to this author, that coin is a priceless treasure.

Some may say it's just a penny, but I say it's a symbol of value and validation.

Most authors don't make a lot of money. Are the hours, the drafts, the rejections, and the time spent at book signings worth it?

Absolutely! The best writing rewards aren't the financial ones. Once that book is in the hands of a reader, especially a child, that's all that matters.

Writing is worth every penny.

That's a perfect example of why we do this writing thing! I recently had a seven-year-old hand me $20 of her own money to buy a book; she'd been saving her allowance. I'm still thinking about her...

The penny seems like an emotional gesture, not a financial one. He was gifting you a payment for your "services". I felt like that sometimes when I read in a children's drama theatre, a long time ago. A child gifted me a feather once because I had been telling her a story about ducks the week before.

Jan,
I totally understand why you're still thinking about that child. I don't think I'll ever forget my "lucky penny" child either. It was so touching to see his conviction in insisting I take that coin.

Thunderelephants,

You're right. It was definitely an emotional response on his part. I felt emotional as well.

Happy writing,
