Not sure if this kind of category has a name, but I've always been a fan of 'self-aware' or 'breaking the 4th wall' kind of kids books.  Books that talk about - or have their characters talk about - being a book.  Melanie Watt's Chester books and Kenn Nesbitt's More Bears! are good examples of this.  But I want more! Anyone have any good suggestions?

Would the second person "advice" books count? My first thought was about The Beginner's Guide to Running Away, but the more popular Dragons Love Tacos falls into this category. That may not be quite what you're looking for, but these books present themselves as advice to a reader in a way that highlights that there's an audience reading the book.  (There's always an audience, but the book doesn't always talk directly to that audience.)

And, of course, the classic The Monster at the End of This Book, which is still ridiculously fun to read to a young child.

Josh Funk's "It's Not Jack and the Beanstalk" is a good one. As is "I Thought This Was A Bear Book" by Tara Lazar. Also two books by Adam Lehrhaupt entitled "Warning! Do Not Open This Book" and "Please Open This Book".

The term you're looking for is "metafiction."

Oh, yes! That's a good one, and thanks for reminding me to reserve a copy of the latest Snappsy book from my library!

The Book with No Pictures comes to mind. And an old one I love is No Laughing, No Smiling, No Giggling by James Stevensen.

The Monster at the End of This Book is good Meta Fiction.
There is an Elephant and Piggie that I think is We Are In A Book. They have fun making the reader say "Banana" :-)

And here's a lesson, with examples, on writing these kinds of books by Darcy Pattison that I think you'll enjoy because I assume you want to write your own: http://www.darcypattison.com/picture-books/metafiction/

David Wiesner's THE THREE PIGS and Herve Tullet's PRESS HERE are both metafiction and a bit different than the others on this list.
