Hello,

Can I get some guidance on how to make a book trailer please?

Thanks,

I think book trailers need to be really high quality to succeed. I've seen so many poorly made ones that would actually put me off reading the book.

But if you really must...

The two main things I would recommend:

1. Make sure it's 30 seconds or under. Nothing worse than sitting through 2 minutes or more of what is basically a bad powerpoint presentation.

2. Concentrate on the words used in your trailer not on the "effect" of how they appear on screen.

I love it when I ignore my own advice (above) !!!

I've just completed a trailer for a new graphic novel by Eoin Colfer and you can see it here:

Definitely did not stay within 30 seconds as I advised, it simply wouldn't have worked, And also I didn't focus on the words at all, just the images. But in my defence it is a graphic novel - with an international audience so I want it to work irrespective of language.

I think I did well with the music choice though so I'm going to give myself points for that!

Look at trailers out there on the web and pull as many good ideas from them as possible. Then decide which two or three of those ideas will work for your book. Keep it simple, keep it short, keep it interesting. Leave people wanting to read the book to find out “what happens.”

Here's another trailer used in a project I was involved in.

This one is an absolute showstopper in terms of it's production values. I was not involved in the production, that was done by Gear Seven in Nashville.

It was great to be part of an amazing team (I created the website) that put all of the marketing together for this book. The marketing and PR was done by Sharon Bially and her team @ Booksavvy in Boston, MA.

Out next week, get a free preview chapter here:

I think the music really makes or breaks a book trailer (though, as a musician, it's not surprising I'd feel this way). I'd invest in a composer or licensing a piece of music that reflects the tone of your book.  The examples Liam posted above did this really well!

Definitely, the music has a huge influence on the emotional impact of a trailer. In this case the music was created specifically for the book. The book actually has it's own specially commissioned soundtrack!
