Since I normally write for an older audience, one of my new year's resolutions was to try my hand at writing for children. I submitted my first piece to a children's magazine in early January, and after a handful of rejections, I just received my first acceptance!

I would never have bothered trying if it weren't for the wonderful information and encouragement here on the boards. Thanks, everyone!

Thanks, everyone! I can’t stop smiling.

And a big congratulations to carrots, who had a poem AND a story accepted on the same day that I received my acceptance!

Oh, Kelsey, you're so sweet and generous to say that.  :flowers2

But I have to tell you, for as thrilled as I was over my good news, I got misty over yours!!! How inspiring to read  how you set that goal of writing for children, sent out that submission, and were accepted by a class act like Highlights!!! (And in really short order, too. Three months to acceptance anywhere is like warp speed!!)

Welcome to the joyous affliction of children's writing!!  :hug

Thank you all so much! You're incredibly sweet!

I read a message that said I can become a PAL level member when I sign a contract. Is that true, or do I need to wait for publication? How do I become a PAL and get "PAL" listed under my name?

Thanks again!

An acceptance is a great achievement, Kelsey.  Congrats!  I'm so happy for you.
Just an FYI:  PAL = published and listed.  I'm no expert, but it seems like that would indicate that you would need to wait until your piece is published (or at least until you know when it will be published).  By the way, Highlights will send you a preprint to review about 6 months before they plan on publishing your work, so you'll know the publication date well in advance.

Once it's published you can get your PAL status, Kelsey! :)
(Also, with my pieces that have been pubbed w/HL I did not know in advance when the publication date would be. Lucky you, Hopeful!)

Kelsey, you can become a PAL once you have a contract. You can go to the main SCBWI site and fill in the required fields. I believe for first timers, they waive the rule about the piece actually being published because it can take a long time. I'm still waiting on Highlights to publish  a couple of poems and I've lost count of the years (13-14?). Congratulations!!!

New!
I'm sorry to say that I'm still slightly confused -- I need someone to explain it like I'm five or link me to the correct page.

Do I apply using this link (https://www.scbwi.org/pal-publishers/) or do I update my profile page by clicking "add magazine article" even if I don't know the publication year?

Thanks again for the advice, everyone.

ETA: I guess I figured it out because it now says "PAL" under my name! Haha!
