Thank you so much, everybody. I was so tired when I posted this that I didn't include the backstory at all.

I've been writing for kids for ten or twelve years, and mostly I've had form rejections all that time. I had some nibbles on a MG novel a few years back and felt like I'd probably get there with my next manuscript--but then I started having kids and ended up switching gears to PBs, which meant I had to start my whole learning curve over. I just restarted querying at the beginning of this year, and at first it was the same as ever--a lot of form rejections. But this summer I've been sending a new piece around, and it got quite a bit of interest. I had a couple of requests and a couple of very nice rejections.

I queried Sara in the middle of all this. It was just a typical slush pile query, and I wasn't expecting anything to come of it. I was more focused on some newer agents who seemed more likely to take a chance on a non-illustrating PB author, and on some mid-career agents I'd met at conferences. When Sara emailed asking for a call, it caught me completely by surprise. The next day, we talked, and she offered rep.

It's such a weird feeling. A decade of nothing, then an offer of rep from an awesome agent overnight.

If you're in those long years of rejections, I know how hard it is. Even hearing other people's encouraging stories starts to feel discouraging. You start to think you should dream smaller, but you can't. So the story you tell yourself about you is stuck in this disappointing place you feel like you'll never escape. If that's where you are right now, just know that in no time at all you could have a much happier, much more hopeful story to tell.

Congratulations, Melissa! What an awesome backstory.  I agree that if you just keep writing and keep working on your craft, eventually something sticks. Even if it takes a long time. :)
