For picture books, my understanding is that publishers like to choose the artists. For graphic novels, my understanding is that publishers prefer that the artist be attached to the project upon submission. (Obviously this does not apply to projects where the author & illustrator are the same person)

Those are two opposing viewpoints, and I wonder how a publisher who offers both handles it. Admittedly I'm a neophyte so this answer may be obvious to everyone but me. Do publishers just have different imprints with different policies? And how could an agent help in this regard?

Hi Arp,

From what I've heard, some PBs and GNs are sold both ways: either with both artist and author already designated OR the artist being chosen after the manuscript is bought. So there is no real hard and fast rule.

An agent could help selling your manuscript WITH an artist if the artist is also a client with that agency, etc.

And yes, an editor at a publisher may take on PBs, GNs, MG, and YA as well, and have different submission requirements for each.

Good luck!

I attended a graphic novel workshop last year that indicated that subbing graphic novels was the same as subbing picture books, but the author lists each spread since the text is so spare. I think there's a write up of the program in the last LI region newsletter for SCBWI. You can check it out.

Thank you both!

(quickly Googles 'spread' to figure out what it means 😂)
